Not a podcast person. In fact, I believe most podcast are the equivalent to low grade cable access shows. Fanboy Radio was the only one I was listening to until I stopped reading monthly comics. (Sorry Scott but when you read trades you want to avoid spoilers.) Even Marvel and DC’s podcasts were “meh”. Granted they are essentially infomercials but at least get some entertainment in them.
I was using Juice to keep up with FbR/Marvel/DC.
Didn’t want iTunes.
Didn’t need iTunes.
Then I was forced iTunes with my use of Safari and QT installs and upgrades. So I look and see they gots some free downloads.
I love 2 things.
Free stuff and beer.
No iBeer yet but I tried some of their free downloads to check some new music and what not.
I also follow Skottie Young and see that he just created a podcast after his move. I’m more into his art but after meeting him briefly and getting a sketch at Comicon I thought I’ll try it. So I add it thru iTunes.
Also at this time my MP3 player went out and Lori got me a Creative Zen and 4GB SD card to go with.
LOVE IT!
and it imports iTunes.
Sooooo I dig it.
I start adding more podcast to try them out and I’M DIGGING IT.
Granted, I still think the content is shit out there but I was able to find some things I was willing to try and better produced.
So this is what I’m trying -
AOTS - Fresh Ink. Now this was video and I haven’t converted it yet to watch but I liked Blair on AOTS and my Zen converts video for me. Did I mention I love my zen? $60 btw.
Blizzcast - Too deep. I game but the details they talked about were out of my league. I like to play a game and not get a degree in it.
The Dan Patrick Show - I so miss him with Keith Oberman.
DC Comics - Hit or Miss. I listened to a cpl of Grant Morrison panels I’m assuming from NYCC and they were great but I love Grant because he is COMPLETELY INSANE!
The Devil and Me - First ep was funny and interesting.
Fanboy Radio - Great!
Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Writing - GREAT!
I Should Be Writing 2.0 - 1st ep I liked. 2nd one ran kinda long.
Marvel Comics - Hit or Miss.
The Murverse - podcaster for I Should Be Writing 2.0 and this ep was a short story she did. Good stuff.
The Onion News Radio - Haven’t listened yet but I expect great things.
SModcast - Kevin Smith. The ep I listened to was Father’s Day and sweet which is not what what you’d expect from Silent Bob.
This American Life - Hit or miss with me.
Vadercast- Haven’t listened yet.
Wordpress Podcast - Haven’t listened yet.
Wordpress Weekly - Haven’t listened yet.
Let me know if you have any you recommend.

So I got a hold of 3 of the Fall show and when you shake the Magic 8 Ball…Outlook not so good.
I’ll start with the worst first.
Do Not Disturb - I like Jerry O’Connell. He’s a friend of the show. This show is a turd. Unfunny. Unwatchable. It tries to be edgy by not being PC. They mock fat people, gay people, black people, skinny people…OH and the laugh track. WHY? God, let me focus. So Jerry is a manager in a hotel that is so classy they only let the skinny hot chicks work the front desk. The HR manager works downstairs with all the undesirables (gay, black and fat). So the lame premise of the ep I saw was a fat girl wants to work the front desk cause that way she’ll be discovered. Huh? WHAT? Discovered for what? Singing. So insert a lot of bad jokes about everyone involved and the plot moves along so that fattie is going to sue cause they are forcing her to stay in her job cause the black HR manager says they don’t want “fatties” up there. BUT WAIT they can’t have this happen cause my boss, Larry Tate is coming over for dinner…sorry wrong show. Now a NY magazine is coming to profile the hotel and the owner (Robert Wagner who will OFFICIALLY do anything after seeing this.) will be there. So the owner confronts the managers about this lawsuit and how they need to deal with it cause he’s an ex-con and WAIT, WHAT? …and they all make nice and realize it’s wrong to call people fatties.
If this ep airs and the series last longer that 3 eps I will shit myself.
Fringe - J.J. Abrams does X-Files with Pacey from Dawson’s Creek all grown up. I had hope for this cause I like J.J. on TV (even Felicity, go ahead call me ghey). It may even get better but I don’t care for the cast. Joshua Jackson doesn’t start off well but he picks up and I’m ok with him by the end of the show. If you are watching Lost you might become tired of the references to a character’s “dark past”. It’s a lot for a premiere but I’d watch it and see where it goes based on J.J. Abrams name and even see if Joshua can carry this show. But this isn’t his show by any means but the rest of the cast wasn’t that interesting. Though my favorite line was “OK, Let’s make some LSD!”
The only hope I have for FOX from their line up is Sit Down, Shut Up. They love their animated shows and it’s from the Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz. Doll House will not last a season cause Fox won’t handle Joss’ show properly (see Firefly).
The other FOX offerings include Secret Millionaire. This is bad in that it’s not only a reality show but a remake of a BBC show. I’m really trying not to judge this but Outnumbered looks like it’s unclear what it is. From the FOX website “OUTNUMBERED takes a fresh and hilarious approach to the staid family sitcom. The show offers “Curb Your Enthusiasm”-style improvised dialogue with a “Malcolm in the Middle”-like premise about the triumphs and travails of parenting. The adult actors are scripted, while the children’s dialogue is improvised and off-the-cuff.” Cause you want the experienced actors to stay on target and the kids to create Larry David type improv? Reread it. It says there is “Curb Your Enthusiasm”-style improvised dialogue and “while the children’s dialogue is improvised and off-the-cuff.” I really don’t know what to say, I mean come on. I don’t have a proof reader for the crap I write, certainly FOX does. Oh and it’s another Brit remake.
Now if you had something really good, now I mean like made just right, would you try to recreate it?
I loved Life on Mars. The BBC version. The ABC version, not so much.
For most people who watched the BBC version it was Gene that made the show. Don’t get me wrong, Gene makes the show but it was John Simm for me. His performance made me believe. He’s a guy that doesn’t look like a TV cop. Especially a TV cop in the 70s. John is a small guy and they even cast a tall woman against him as a love interest in Liz White. It worked. I believed. Granted it took me some time but I loved it.
The ABC pilot is almost the exact same ep with just a few minot changes. Gene is toned down. WPC (Woman Police Constable) Annie Cartwright (Liz’s character) is seen more as a detective than the role Annie is as a part of the British force.
So why change it? Why hire Irish actors to play Americans and re do what was great already? Cause they have to fuck it. US TV has to have 22-24 eps a season. Is it good? Then make as much of it as you can!!! MORE MORE MORE!! The entire run of the BBC version is 16 eps. It has an ending. Can you believe it? A show that actually starts and ends without being canceled or having to roll to the big screen cause there was so much left unsaid. Do network’s think we are stupid? Do they think that remaking a show will help us understand it? Can we just not understand a show that is 8 ep a season? Is that British accent too difficult to understand? What would the cost be to just buy the show to air here vs remaking it completely?
I also want to point out that ABC has NO NEW ORIGINAL programming. In fact, this show (being a remake doesn’t make it original) is the only new non-reality show on ABC. I will credit ABC for bringing back Pushing Daisies cause I love that show. Watch that. This I give a half season.
I really think after looking at this small sampling that maybe the writers should go back on strike or move to the UK to make something we can remake here. Imagine you work for one of these networks and all you do is transcribe foreign shows for American audiences. A Jekyll remake isn’t too far behind. I can smell it.
